Internship at Urban Mustard Seed
Hey there,
So you stumbled upon this awesome resource. What are you going to do next?
Urban Mustard Seed values education and seeks to provide quality mentorship to budding educators new or within the profession. As a whole, it can be a challenge to navigate new waters / territory if it is unknown to you. When seeking a career in education, it is vital to have hands-on experiences right away.
First, hands-on time in the classroom will enable you to ensure this is the RIGHT fit for you. Some folks realize immediately that the classroom is not "for me". They can then pivot while still enrolled into other facets of Education (Administration, Curriculum development, Planning, Human Resources, etc.) or switch degree fields entirely before wasting time, energy and money.
Secondly, I'd like to say from my own experience, the time within the classroom (substitute teaching and internships) were invaluable to me to "keep on keeping on!" and stay focused with "eyes on the prize" while knee deep in a vastly over scheduled college transcript, working full-time and raising animals on acreage in WY.
Lastly, it is important for the students to see life-long learners. The children will inquire about your "why" long before you and the mentor sit down to discuss your rational. Children are seers and in-tune with their gut about you as an educator right away. Taking the time now, to focus some energy on relationship building with a child or many children, is simply what you do as an educator.
Best & blessings,
H
